Canva co-founder and CEO Melanie Perkins told staff on Tuesday, Nov. 3, that 1,271 people, or 22% of the company, will be affected by a restructuring, according to a [memo Canva published](https://www.canva.com/newsroom/news/canva-team-update/?ref=engineerpal.com). Some will see their roles change, some will be asked to relocate, and some will be laid off.

Canva hasn't said how the 1,271 splits across those three outcomes, so the number of layoffs isn't known. The figure implies a workforce of about 5,800 staff.

"This is without doubt the hardest moment in our thirteen-year history," Perkins wrote. She pointed to slowing business: "our growth has slowed for the first time in a decade."

[TechCrunch reported](https://techcrunch.com/2026/11/04/canva-lays-off-over-1200-people-amid-slowing-growth/?ref=engineerpal.com) that Canva cut its revenue growth forecast to 20% from 30% to address rising AI costs. The memo doesn't say AI is taking over the affected roles.

## What changes for Canva's engineers

The biggest structural change is that Canva is "bringing Product, Growth and Platform together into one Product Org," Perkins wrote. She framed it as a return to "small, empowered teams."

The memo also describes "simplifying layers, consolidating overlapping responsibilities" and "incorporating narrower subspecialties into broader roles." For engineers, that points to fewer management levels and more generalist jobs. Canva hasn't disclosed how many engineering roles are affected.

Location is changing too. "Sydney will become the primary home for more of our product teams," the memo says, along with other roles where "close collaboration" matters. Canva hasn't said which offices lose roles.

From January, Canva expects "most Hybrid Canvanauts to spend around 2 to 3 days in the office each week, depending on what makes sense in your area," according to the memo.

Departing staff will "receive at least six months of salary, inclusive of statutory entitlements, regardless of location." The package also includes 12 months of healthcare where Canva already provides it, removal of the one-year vesting cliff for recent hires, career coaching, and their Canva MacBook.

Canva is also offering US$10,000 grants through a Canva Collective Fund for people starting something of their own.

## How it compares with other November cuts

Canva is one of several tech companies to announce cuts this month, though the actions differ. Canva's 22% covers role changes and relocations as well as layoffs, while the others are reductions in headcount.

Squarespace is cutting about 19% of employees, "around 300," a spokesperson [told TechCrunch](https://techcrunch.com/2026/11/02/web-host-squarespace-lays-off-19-of-its-employees/?ref=engineerpal.com). SUSE plans to cut about 10% of staff, according to a CEO memo [seen by The Register](https://www.theregister.com/software/2026/11/02/suse-to-cut-one-in-ten-employees-because-of-ai/5306950?ref=engineerpal.com), which explicitly cites "automation and AI."

NICE said in its [third-quarter filing](https://www.stocktitan.net/sec-filings/NICE/6-k-nice-ltd-current-report-foreign-issuer-0fcd936a3280.html?ref=engineerpal.com) on Nov. 4 that it will reduce its global workforce by approximately 5%, with $15 million to $20 million in charges.

The wider hiring picture is mixed. [Dice's October report](https://www.dice.com/hiring/recruitment/reports/dice-tech-job-report?ref=engineerpal.com) shows tech job postings up 20% year over year, with AI and machine learning postings up 91%.

Indeed data [cited by CNBC](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/11/ai-software-developer-jobs.html?ref=engineerpal.com) shows senior roles made up 71% of the rise in software development postings from May 2025 to May 2026\. Overall postings remain about 27.5% below pre-pandemic levels.

Layoffs across the US economy remain low. The [Bureau of Labor Statistics](https://www.bls.gov/news.release/jolts.nr0.htm?ref=engineerpal.com) counted 1.6 million layoffs and 7.5 million job openings in September, and [Indeed Hiring Lab](https://hiringlab.indeed.com/2026/11/03/september-2026-jolts-report-eerily-quiet/?ref=engineerpal.com) put the layoff rate at 1%.

Early-career engineers face the tightest market. [Stanford HAI research](https://hai.stanford.edu/news/tracking-ais-real-time-footprint-on-the-labor-market?ref=engineerpal.com) found employment of 22- to 25-year-olds in software development and customer service has fallen more than 3% a year since November 2022.
